Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the molars that are farthest back in the mouth. These teeth are the last to grow into the mouth, usually after age 18. Wisdom teeth often become impacted - they do not grow in properly.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a myriad of problems, including gum disease, infection, decay, even tumors. To prevent potential problems, wisdom teeth are usually extracted at the first sign that they may be impacted.

tooth extractions
In extreme cases where a tooth cannot be saved, an extraction will be performed. Teeth may need to be removed if they are decayed or infected. In some cases, teeth are removed prior to orthodontic procedures. Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted. With modern dental methods, you may only experience minor discomfort and bleeding. Our dentists will talk with you about ways to make your tooth extraction experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

Our dentists will determine if your tooth needs to be extracted. He will examine your teeth and gums. X-rays will provide more information about your tooth, gum, and bone structures. Before removing your tooth, your dentist will numb the affected area. A pain reliever is applied to your gum before you receive a shot of pain relieving medication.

When your gum is numb, the dentist will remove your tooth. In some cases, a few stitches may be needed to help your gums heal after your tooth is removed. You may receive some antibiotics to fight infection. Some bleeding can be expected, and pain medication may be prescribed for residual discomfort. After an extraction, dry socket can occur when a blood clot fails to form in the socket where the tooth has been extracted or the clot has been dislodged, and the healing is significantly delayed. If this occurs, a follow-up appointment is necessary to apply medication directly to the extraction site.
